"Speak Out Against Racism" Long Term Campaign at American University
in Bulgaria
On April 13, Thursday People
to People International (PTPI) American University in Bulgaria Club (AUBG) in cooperation with UNITED has launched its long-term
campaign “Speak Out Against Racism”. The presentation of the campaign has been held at 20:00 pm in Multipurpose
Room, Scaptopara Residence Hall with the support of American University in Bulgaria. The flyers regarding the time and location
of the presentation and more than eighty UNITED posters on “Speak Out Against Racism” have been attached in the
University Main Building and Dormitories.
More than forty students and one university
professor attended to the presentation of the Racism Campaign. The presentation started with a movie shown on Racism. The
launch of the campaign started with the presentation on racism, what it is, history, types of racism and how racism can be
defeated in the university campuses. The president of PTPI AUBG Club Mr. Rauf Zeynalov gave a presentation on Objectives and
Action Plan of the Campaign. Mr. Zeynalov informed the students about the launch of e-Newsletter on the Campaign and encouraged
them to sign in for the newsletter to receive recent updates regarding the campaign and get actively involved.
The campaign will continue for seven weeks
and will include Lecture Series on Racism from different NGOs and Governmental organizations, and one workshop “Students
Against Racism” will be organized by professional trainers on racism with the participation of the students. The active
participants in the workshop will receive certificates. The campaign will continue with a football game organized in the campus
“Racism Out of Football” by the Griffins Club of the University. There will be an essay competition on racism
and related topics and the winning students will receive a monetary award and the winning essays will be published in the
university media. The campaign will continue with “Movie Nights on Racism” with the support of American University
in Bulgaria, and three different movies and short clips will be shown on Racism throughout the week at Multipurpose Room on
a big screen. The refreshments will be provided during the Movie Nights. The campaign will finish with the “Marching
of Students on Racism” with the participation of students and faculty members in Blagoevgrad City, Bulgaria. There will
be special web forum designed after the campaign for students to report any racist jokes and actions in the campus. The main
objective of the campaign is to increase the awareness of the students in American University in Bulgaria on racism and actively
involve students on fight against racism.
April 1-7, 2006
PTPI’s Plovdiv Chapter held a Human Rights Education seminar for teachers and trainers, April
1-7. PTPI members, as well as members of different youth organizations from Romania, Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria, attended
the event. The 25 participants learned how to introduce elements of human rights education into their youth events and how
to facilitate training. The seminar was a great success! A big thank you goes to the organizers Zina Lubenova
and Stoyka Bakalova, who made this event possible.
September 15, 2005
Ms. Verena Denk from the PTPI
European Office in Berlin was in Plovdiv for an one day work meeting with PTPI
Plovdiv Chapter members.
On the meeting participants have an oportunity to see a general PP presentation
of the PTPI activities around the world, and in particular in Europe. The main themes of the discussion was a fundrising,
new project ideas and oportunities to take part, as a PTPI Chapter and
future youth perticipation in the PTPI activities.

Polia Petkova (19) of Plovdiv, Bulgaria was one of 51 students from around the world who
have participated in Peace Camp 2005: An Evolution of Thought and Action in Egypt. The camp, hosted by People
to People International (PTPI) , for students ages 16-19 and was held April 30 -May 10, 2005.
